The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 2: Squirrel You Know It’s True by Ryan North

Star Rating: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

Format: library graphic novel

Summary: Squirrel Girl faces off against a new for who calls herself Girl Squirrel.

Review: This continues to be a super fun comic. It starts with Nancy, Doreen’s roommate, being held hostage with a bunch of other people in the head of the Statue of Liberty. The hostages pass the time by telling stories about what they know about Squirrel Girl, the stories are wildly inaccurate and annoy Nancy to no end as she tries to correct them.

The main arc centers on Girl Squirrel who is really an Asgardian squirrel god who is able to influence others through their insecurities and jealousies. Basically the Asgard squirrel Regina George. I liked Squirrel Girl teaming up with Thor(s) and Loki as well. Nancy is the one who goes to Asgard which was fun. She writes Cat-Thor fanfiction so she was extremely star struck. Her Cat Thor ideas inspired Loki to shapeshifter his head to a cat Thor head most of the arc which was really hilarious.

Squirrel Girl also meets Koi Boi and Chipmunk Hunk in this. They’re both in her classes, which makes Nancy feel a little left out by being the only one in their circle without powers. But Doreen tries her best to make her feel like part of the team and it’s nice. Koi Boi and Chipmunk Hunk are okay, there wasn’t much time in the story to really get to know the characters. Hopefully it gets better because they seem like they could be interesting.

This comic continues to be clever and adorable. The second volume was solid and I’m excited to read the next volume in this series. It doesn’t surprise me that this was a pretty long lasting series because it’s just so fun to read.

Recommendation: Totally take the time to read Squirrel Girl, Doreen is the absolute cutest.
