Beastly Bones by William Ritter
Star rating: ★★★★ ☆ 4/5 stars
Format: library eaudiobook
Summary: The second book in the Jackaby series, Abigail Rook tries to convince her employer to investigate a stolen dinosaur bone from a dig site. Jackaby shows no interest in the idea until a mysterious death pushes him to look into it.
Review: I liked parts of this but I definitely liked the first book much better. I still don’t understand who killed the woman from the very beginning and why. Jenny’s issues seemed like they should be addressed though it may be an over arching plot for the series.
I like how this series is sort of like a paranormal Sherlock series. It’s fun and there are a lot of cool creatures and such in it. I don’t find it much deeper than fun though, the story underneath the paranormal and supernatural isn’t very substantial. If it wasn’t for the paranormal aspect I’m not sure I would be as interested. I haven’t noticed much of any character development. Which, isn’t so bad for a second book but still, I wish there was something.
I was seriously disappointed that the journalist woman dies in the big fight but the tracker/Hunter gets to live. Like she was so awesome, unwilling to give up on a story. She was also a rare friend for Abigail. It felt like such a waste for a book that is very lacking in female characters.
The romance is nice, they’re sweet and it’s a good slow burn. I really like that Jackaby has never even been considered as an option for Abigail. Part of me really hopes that there’s never really any romantic interest introduced for Jackaby. He doesn’t seem like he has the time to court anyone.
Recommendation: If you liked the first book then I think you’d enjoy the continuation.
